How to Create a MAX and MIN Function in Excel

The MAX and MIN functions in Excel allow you to find the largest and smallest values in a range of cells, respectively. Here’s how you can use them:

MAX Function:

  1. Select the Cell:
    • Click on the cell where you want the result of your MAX function to appear.
  2. Start with an Equals Sign (=):
    • All Excel functions start with an equals sign (=). Type = in the selected cell.
  3. Type “MAX”:
    • After the equals sign, start typing the word “MAX”. Excel will auto-suggest functions as you type, and “MAX” should appear.
  4. Open Parenthesis:
    • After typing “MAX”, add an open parenthesis (. This tells Excel that you’re about to specify the range of cells you want to find the maximum value from.
  5. Select the Range of Cells:
    • Highlight the range of cells you want to find the maximum value from. For example, if you want to find the maximum value in cells A1 to A10, you would type: =MAX(A1:A10)
  6. Close the Parenthesis and Press Enter:
    • After selecting the range, close the parenthesis ) to complete the function, then press Enter. The result of the MAX function will be displayed in the selected cell.

MIN Function:

The process for using the MIN function is very similar to the MAX function:

  1. Select the Cell:
    • Click on the cell where you want the result of your MIN function to appear.
  2. Start with an Equals Sign (=):
    • Type = in the selected cell.
  3. Type “MIN”:
    • Start typing “MIN” after the equals sign.
  4. Open Parenthesis:
    • Add an open parenthesis (.
  5. Select the Range of Cells:
    • Highlight the range of cells you want to find the minimum value from. For example, if you want to find the minimum value in cells A1 to A10, you would type: =MIN(A1:A10)
  6. Close the Parenthesis and Press Enter:
    • After selecting the range, close the parenthesis ) to complete the function, then press Enter.

Now, you should have the maximum or minimum value displayed in the selected cell. These functions are very useful for quickly identifying the highest and lowest values in a set of data in Excel.
